Author Guidelines

Full-Length Articles: The OKH Journal welcomes the submission of full-length scholarly articles of 6,000-9,000 words (excluding references and other supplementary material) that fall within the mission of the journal.  Full-length articles must meet all of the requirements listed in the "Submission Preparation Checklist" below, and be submitted directly to the journal website.  Articles will be reviewed by a double-blind peer review process to be considered for publication.

Discussion Pieces: The OKH Journal reserves space for more informal written pieces, discussing previous journal articles, news events, or opinions on topics that are central to its mission.  Discussion pieces should be 1,000-2,000 words in length and must meet the first three requirements listed in the "Submission Preparation Checklist" below.  Publication decisions for discussion pieces will be made by the editor based on the quality of the submissions.

Book Reviews: The OKH Journal also welcomes reviews of books relevant to the mission of the journal.  Reviewers should prepare a review of 800-1,200 words in length that meets the first three requirements listed in the "Submission Preparation Checklist" below. Publication decisions for book reviews will be made by the editor based on the quality of the review and its relevance to the mission of the OKH Journal.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission must be in Microsoft Word format (DOC or DOCX). The style must be Chicago, 16th edition, as recommended by the American Anthropological Association.
  2. The submission must be written in accessible but scholarly English.  A general knowledge of the field of anthropology is assumed.  Theological terms and ideas can be introduced, but should be explained in clear, ordinary language.

  3. The author profile must be completed or updated online at the OKH Journal website.  Contact information will be published with the submission if accepted for publication.  It will not be used for any other purpose or passed on to any other party.

  4. A full-length article must be 6,000 - 9,000 words long, exclusive of the abstract, keywords, reference list, endnotes, and appendices.
  5. Where there is original research being presented, evidence must be given that the studies were conducted in accordance with ethical research standards (eg., have Institutional Review Board approval).

  6. All necessary permissions (such as for quoted text of more than 500 words) must be obtained and paid for by the author.

  7. A 100-150 word abstract of the article must be submitted along with the manuscript. The abstract should be carefully edited and reworked for accuracy and completeness.

  8. Five to seven keywords must be provided along with the abstract. The keywords should be chosen carefully as they will be influential in readers' ability to locate the article on the internet. The abstract and keywords should be placed on the first page of the article itself, rather than in a separate document.

  9. The article must have a separate title page indicating the author's identity. For purposes of double-blind review, the article should not have any reference to the author's identity in the text.  Note:  This requires a seach to insure that the author is not accidentally referenced in a citation.
  10. The article should not be under consideration with another journal. A response from the OKH Journal to a full-length article can be expected within three months.
